Highlights From Accelerate in 2024

By: Accelerate

In 2024 Accelerate mobilized tens of millions of public and philanthropic dollars to support high-dosage tutoring initiatives across the country. We partnered with states, districts, tutoring providers, researchers, and advocates to improve academic outcomes for students, particularly those in historically underserved communities. And we’re excited that the year ahead marks our continued commitment to scaling best practices, advancing student learning, and supporting positive life outcomes for our youth. Below, we share highlights from a busy year.

Programs

  • Selected 19 organizations through our Call to Effective Action grant program that are serving over 60,000 students in 650 schools across 21 states.
  • Launched the Accelerate State Tutoring Fellowship in collaboration with Education Commission of the States, the first formalized network for state tutoring leads, with 28 Fellows representing 24 states.
  • Continued our States Leading Recovery grant program through work with Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Louisiana, and Ohio. Our next state cohort will be announced in early 2025.

Research & Resources

            • Published the first three Quarterly Research Notes (MarchJulyNovember) summarizing what we know, what we’re learning, and what we still need to learn about personalized learning initiatives.
            • In collaboration with ProvenTutoring, produced a playbook and report for community-based organizations aiming to enhance and scale their tutoring programs.
            • Proposed new metrics for tutoring efficiency and cost effectiveness in an original research report
            • Reflected on our work and shared key lessons learned from our 2023-24 Call to Effective Action.
            • Released a State Field Guide for state leaders designing and implementing a statewide high-dosage tutoring program.

            In the News

            • Thought leadership pieces published in the Washington Post (Kevin Huffman), The 74 (Jennifer Bronson), Education Next (Matthew Steinberg), Governing (Narric Rome), and The Cutting Ed (Jason Godfrey).
            • Featured as expert speakers at conferences and panels hosted by the American Enterprise Institute, ASU+GSV, Bellwether, Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, Center of Educational Innovation, CityTutor DC, National Conference on Student Assessment, National Education Leaders’ Workshop, National Governor’s Association, Open Education Group, PIE Network, Santa Clara County, Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness, Southern Education Foundation, and TN ALL Corps Tutoring Summit, among others.

Thank you to the schools and districts across the country who opened their doors to us this year. Most of Accelerate’s team has worked in classrooms, schools, and districts – so while our work is national in scope, we gain so much from seeing students in the local communities we serve.
