Off to a Great Start: The Potential for Tutoring Paired with the Off2Class Foundational Literacy Curriculum to Boost English Proficiency Gains for Adolescent Newcomer English Learners

Provider: Off2Class

Program Description

This program pairs adolescent English learners with a live tutor (not their regular classroom teacher) who joins their English-language class remotely. The tutor delivers video or audio instruction via an online platform, working with one to three students at a time, for about two 30-minute sessions a week, over roughly 18 weeks. Students stay in their regular classroom with their teacher present during tutoring.

Findings
  • Significant positive effect: Students with a tutor in their English class outscored students without one by 0.35 SD on WIDA ACCESS Reading, an English-proficiency test for English learners. On general reading tests, that would represent more than a year of additional learning growth, but typical benchmarks may not apply to this test.
  • Students received, on average, 10.3 hours of tutoring, representing 57% of the intended 18 hours.
  • Effects appeared larger for high schoolers than middle schoolers and for longer-term English learners than for newcomers. Those subgroups are smaller, so the results are less certain than the overall finding.
  • About $1,300 per student for the year including all inputs, not just sticker price. Comparison-group students were taught the same curriculum by their teacher, without a tutor.
  • The sample was small (about 150 students), which limits confidence in the subgroup results. Prior research also shows programs often have smaller effects when they expand to more students.
